With this little document, we present the first step of neurofeedback training. Our goal is to summarize. We will detail such and similar topics later. For now, we are "staying afloat".
The survey
We simply call the first step of neurofeedback training "mapping". By this we mean when we give feedback on the activity of the points of the entire surface of the cerebral cortex that are relatively equidistant from each other.
The activity is measured broken down into individual wave types, using colors. Dark blue indicates low activity, while red indicates high activity. The transitions between the two are indicated by light blue, green, lemon yellow, and orange colors. (The activity level increases in this order.)
Examples
There are general electrophysiological phenomena that occur in almost the same way in healthy people. Here we highlight two examples of these phenomena:
- When they speak to us, the frontal cortex areas are more active.
- When someone closes their eyes, alpha wave activity increases in the occipital (back cortex) areas.
When, during such an examination, we find that in a specific area there is an overactivity compared to the wave activity seen in normal cases, that is, in healthy brains, we rightly assume a shift in the equilibrium state of the system (that is, the client's brain). Examples of this:
- In the case of clients with ADHD (i.e. hyperactive ones), the delta wave activity in the waking state is higher than usual.
- In people with high anxiety levels, high beta wave activity is stronger than average.
The result of the survey
Of course, many things can affect the current state of our brain, such as fatigue or medication.
A knowledgeable person can decide why we perceive some deviation from the usual, and can also decide whether the specific problem can be helped with neurofeedback training. After that, you can also suggest which treatment can be used to achieve the desired positive change.
